Green and Rust Coloured Leaves Across Blue Pond Water
Lily pads spread across deep blue water in this close photograph from Algonquin Park, Ontario. Most are bright green, but rust, yellow and red leaves introduce small changes throughout the view. I photographed the pond in colour, drawn to the natural mosaic on its surface and the open water threading between the leaves.
The pads are more crowded on the left, where their rounded shapes overlap and nearly cover the water. Toward the centre and upper right, larger gaps give the eye a quieter place to rest. Thin stems remain visible beneath some leaves, adding finer lines to a composition built mainly from broad, rounded forms. Each pad has its own marks and colour, so the pattern stays varied even where the shapes repeat.
I found this pond not far from my northern studio and made the photograph in 2014. Rather than showing a distant shore or a whole forest, I wanted to stay with what was happening directly on the water. The close view makes the small differences matter: a red leaf among green ones, a darker patch on a pad, or a clear blue opening beside a dense group.
For a room that needs natural colour without a busy landscape, this image offers a calm surface with plenty of detail. It suits collectors drawn to Algonquin, water plants or abstract patterns found in nature. In a living space or reading corner, the blue water keeps the bright foliage balanced, inviting the eye to move slowly among the leaves.
