A Vendor Beside Bouquets Under Overlapping Market Umbrellas
The flowers fill the foreground, but the seller gives the market scene its human focus. I photographed him in Zagreb, Croatia, standing with his hands in the pockets of a heavy coat. Pale umbrellas overlap above the stalls, and the black and white frame keeps the surrounding activity visible around him.
I like the contrast between the bouquets’ delicate detail and the man’s darker clothing. Crates and containers create an uneven arrangement below, while the vendor stands more clearly outlined at the right. His direct expression holds attention without needing a large gesture.
The wider view brings other people, tables and market equipment into the photograph. Umbrella poles divide the space, and the broken canopy adds a repeating pattern above the flowers. Those layers make the setting part of the portrait rather than a background that could be removed.
Black and white lets the different surfaces register without competing floral colours. The pale bouquets and umbrellas balance the darker coat and stalls, with smaller details continuing into the distance. I wanted to preserve the sense of being within an ordinary working market. For me, the photograph’s character comes from one particular person held among the objects and activity around him, with the flowers providing both a visual counterweight and a clear connection to the place where I found him.
