A Fleeting Expression Found On The Streets Of Southern India

I was walking through the streets of southern India with my camera, doing what I often do when I travel: watching people. I am never looking for perfection. I am looking for character, an expression, a face that makes me stop. Every once in a while I come across someone who seems almost made for a photograph, and this elderly woman was one of those people.

Her expression is what caught me first. The narrowed eyes, tightly formed mouth, deeply lined face and slightly skeptical look create a portrait that refuses to reveal itself all at once. There is humor in it, perhaps a little suspicion, certainly personality. I can look at her face repeatedly and still wonder exactly what she was thinking at that instant. These brief encounters are one of the reasons I remain so drawn to street photography in India.

I photographed her in black and white because color was unnecessary here. The lines and textures of her face are the photograph. Her patterned headscarf wraps around her head and falls behind her shoulder, framing the face naturally against an almost completely dark background. Light catches every wrinkle and contour without softening the years written across her skin. The pale fabric of her clothing provides another layer of texture while the darkness surrounding her keeps my attention exactly where I want it.

This is the kind of portrait I hope to find when I walk without a rigid plan. I was simply moving through the streets, looking for interesting people to photograph, and suddenly there she was. A gem. The encounter may have lasted only moments, but the expression gave me far more than a conventional posed portrait ever could.

As wall art, the strong monochrome tones and nearly black background give this portrait a graphic presence that works particularly well in contemporary, minimalist, or traditionally furnished interiors. I think it will appeal most strongly to collectors who are drawn to human character, travel photography, and photographs where a single expression carries the entire frame.

For me, this photograph is exactly why I keep wandering with a camera—the possibility that somewhere around the next corner I will encounter another unforgettable face worthy of a black and white street portrait.
