An Unusual Painted Creature Beside a Rough Staircase
The painted creature seems to belong to the wall and to another world at the same time. Its horse-like body and bird-like head fill the left side of this Havana interior, beside a rough staircase. I was drawn to how the unusual image sits among such practical, everyday surroundings.
The painting has a broad outline, but its surface is interrupted by marks, streaks and the texture of the wall beneath it. On the right, open stair treads and upright supports create a more angular arrangement. Overhead beams continue those lines across the ceiling. A television and a few smaller objects remain near the foot of the stairs, keeping the room’s ordinary character visible.
Black and white connects the mural to the rest of the interior. The painted forms, worn surfaces and wooden structure all become part of one tonal scene, while differences in shape keep them distinct. I find the contrast between the creature’s rounded body and the stairway’s repeated edges particularly useful. It gives the photograph a relationship to explore rather than just an unusual object to notice.
I photographed this interior in Havana, Cuba, in 2017. What interested me was the meeting of imagination and the physical setting around it. The painting remains the main subject, but the staircase, ceiling and modest furnishings explain why this particular view held my attention. I wanted to keep that context, allowing the room and its mural to remain together.
