Broken Glass And Peeling Surfaces Frame A Dark Interior

Inside the abandoned Ellis Island Hospital in New York City, layers of damaged architecture create a view that seems to keep receding into the building. An old wooden window frame fills much of the foreground, its surface dry, worn, and scarred by age. Sections of textured glass remain above, while a large broken opening exposes another room beyond. Deeper inside, a second window and a narrow slatted opening catch small traces of light.

I am drawn to the way the photograph moves from one surface to another. Rough plaster occupies the right side of the frame, contrasting with the weathered wood and the darker, peeling interior walls. Across the upper portion, heavy wooden crosspieces interrupt the opening and make the structure feel almost improvised after years of deterioration. Even the floor has become part of the subject, its cracked and flaking surface carrying the same evidence of neglect.

That accumulation of worn material places the photograph naturally within my abandoned and forgotten places photography, where architecture is often most revealing after its original purpose has disappeared. Here, there is no single dramatic object demanding attention. The interest comes from layers: window within window, darkness interrupted by light, smooth glass beside damaged plaster, and carefully constructed architectural elements slowly breaking apart.

The sepia treatment keeps the palette restrained and emphasizes the browns, grays, and muted earth tones already present in the hospital interior. It also allows the textures to carry more visual weight without turning the scene into a completely neutral black-and-white photograph. The brightest opening near the center becomes a small visual destination, pulling the eye through the darker foreground and into the depth of the room.

I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. I print using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the fine surface detail in the wood, plaster, glass, and deteriorated floor.
