Riot Gear And Shields During Toronto G20 Demonstrations

I made this photograph while walking through Toronto during the G20 demonstrations, moving through the streets with my camera and documenting the event as it unfolded. I was there as a photographer, not as a participant in the protest. What interested me was the unusual transformation of familiar city streets and the sheer visual presence of the police assembled throughout the downtown core.

This frame concentrates completely on that police presence. A heavily equipped officer occupies the center of the photograph, surrounded by layers of other officers wearing helmets, protective body armor, and uniforms. Transparent riot shields enter from both sides of the frame, creating a physical border around the scene. For me, photographs like this belong naturally within my G20 protest photography because they document not only demonstrators, but the security response and atmosphere surrounding a major public event.

What makes the photograph work for me is the central officer. Everything around him feels busy and compressed, yet his face gives the frame a clear point of attention. Behind him, officers overlap in different directions. Some wear riot helmets with raised visors while others wear standard police caps. Equipment, shields, straps, protective padding, and fragments of lettering accumulate throughout the image, giving the photograph a dense documentary quality.

Black and white was an obvious choice. Without color competing for attention, the repeated dark uniforms, transparent shields, faces, reflective helmet surfaces, and architectural lines become much more pronounced. There is also a strong contrast between the individual expressions of the officers and the almost uniform appearance created by their equipment.

I am drawn to photographs that preserve these brief pieces of public history without needing to tell the viewer what conclusion to reach. I photographed what was in front of me and allowed the camera to record the people, details, and tension of the street.
