A Window Cat Beside a Doorway Framed by Plants
A cat in the right-hand window gave me a reason to stop beside this brick house while walking through Amsterdam. The doorway and tall windows already made a pleasing arrangement, but that small watcher brought the facade to life. I photographed the scene in black and white, keeping the whole entrance and its surrounding plants in view.
The dark wooden door sits between two pale window frames, with a smaller pane above it and patterned brick arches overhead. Leaves partly fill the left window, while the cat appears near the bottom of the glass on the right. Outside, plants reach across the entry and gather in pots beside a small table. Their loose stems and foliage soften the regular brick courses and the clean divisions of the door and windows.
I worked with the even daylight and stayed with the scene as the cat watched the street. The light brought out the mortar, worn paint, roof tiles, and paving without one surface overpowering the others. What stays with me is the balance between the ordered front of the house and the everyday details around it. The cat is small within the photograph, yet finding it changes how I look at the whole entrance. This Amsterdam street view rewards that closer attention while retaining a simple, welcoming shape from across a room.
