Covered Boats Along a Leafy Canal Edge
I had no fixed destination when I found this canal view in Amsterdam. Walking beside the water, I slowed down as the tree canopy began to fill the space above the boats. The houses were partly hidden by leaves, with their windows and doorways appearing through the branches. I liked the way the view brought several scales together: small boats close to the water, a continuous row of buildings behind them, and the spreading tree reaching across almost the entire scene.
I kept the canal in the lower part of the frame, where fine ripples carry the light toward the foreground. Along the opposite edge, the boats form a loose sequence rather than a perfectly even row. Some are covered, their pale fabric making broad shapes against the darker water. Others reveal their open interiors. Behind them, railings and bicycles add a finer pattern along the bank. At the right, an arch of branches stands above a picnic table, echoing the larger canopy overhead.
The black and white treatment draws the brickwork, leaves and water into a range of textures that I find especially rewarding in this photograph. The architecture gives it a firm background, but the foliage breaks up those straight edges. I remember noticing more as I stayed: a reflected window, a fold in a boat cover, another small shape along the railing. I wanted the finished image to invite that same unhurried looking, with its details gradually emerging from the wider canal scene.
