Amsterdam Royal Palace and Ornate Streetlamp Black and White Photography
A Tall Lantern Casts Its Shadow Across Pale Stone
I was walking through Amsterdam with a coffee and my camera when the morning light on the Royal Palace made me stop. It was around 7:30, and the ornate streetlamp stood clearly against the pale facade. I photographed the scene in black and white, keeping the lamp’s carved base, the cobbled ground and the repeated windows together.
The lamp becomes a foreground subject of its own. Its broad base has dense decorative detail, followed by a narrower shaft and the tall lantern above. Behind it, the palace windows sit in a regular grid, with columns and carved ornaments between them. I wanted the darker metal to remain distinct without losing the texture in the stone.
The light gives the facade another layer. Bright areas alternate with shadows along the columns, while the lamp’s silhouette extends across the lower wall and paving. The arched openings at ground level repeat beneath the rectangular windows above. That change of shape makes the building more varied than it first appears from a distance.
A small seated figure is visible near the far side, but much of the foreground is open. I like how the close cobbles lead toward the lamp before the eye reaches the palace. The photograph keeps the moment that interrupted my walk: a familiar landmark seen through the strong shape of a streetlight and the direction of early light.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
