Overhanging Branches Frame Houses Above a Rippling Waterway
From a small bridge in Utrecht, I watched the canal run between closely arranged buildings. The light was overcast, bringing out the brickwork without strong shadows. This black and white photograph keeps the water at the centre, with leafy branches above and a lower walkway following the right bank.
The houses on the left come close to the edge of the frame. Their tall windows and narrow fronts make a vertical pattern that continues down toward the water. Across the canal, the buildings turn with the bank, giving the view a gentle change of direction rather than a straight corridor.
I was especially interested in the different levels. On the right, doorways open onto the low waterside path, while the facades rise above it. Steps connect that lower space to the street. Those small transitions make the canal feel like part of the neighbourhood, with life arranged around its edges.
The water has its own texture. Reflections from the buildings break into fine ripples, becoming less distinct in the foreground. Above them, the broad branch reaches into the picture from the right, softening the repeated windows and rooflines with an irregular canopy of leaves.
I wanted the photograph to keep the feeling of looking slowly from that bridge. The architecture gives me plenty of detail, but the open water provides a path through it. Under the soft sky, the buildings, lower walkway and branches belong to one quiet view of Utrecht.
