Quiet Dublin Street at Dawn Black and White Photography
Cobbles and Concert Notices Before the City Wakes
A face on a concert announcement seems to be watching over this otherwise quiet Dublin street. Beyond it, the cobbles run between close-set buildings toward a small car and a cluster of glowing lights. I made this black and white photograph at dawn, when the street’s public notices still promised activity but the road itself held a pause.
The near wall takes up much of the view. Its rough plaster, barred opening and shuttered doorway lead the eye toward the distance, where the buildings become smaller and the street narrows. An old-fashioned wall lamp reaches out above the notices. Under a softly clouded sky, the bright points farther down the lane give the scene a gentle sense of depth.
What interests me is that tension between the empty street and the life suggested by its surfaces. The Post Malone announcement dates the scene to a particular cultural moment, while the masonry and cobbled road feel firmly rooted in the city. Removing colour lets those layers sit together: the bold printed face, the uneven wall and the repeated lines of paving all have room to speak.
This photograph suits someone who enjoys Dublin beyond its busiest landmarks. In a hallway, reading corner or home office, it offers the pleasure of looking down a street before the day has gathered speed. I photographed it in 2019, keeping the early light and the city’s ordinary details at the centre of the image.
