A Narrow Column of Stickers Across Brilliant Red Paint
A sticker-covered drainpipe runs down the centre of a vivid red facade in Dublin. The stickers form a narrow, crowded column between broad areas of painted wall and decorative moulding. I photographed this street detail for that immediate contrast: a small collection of overlapping graphics against one strong field of colour.
The red is what catches the eye first. It covers both the textured wall and the raised architectural trim, allowing their differences to emerge through light and shadow rather than separate colours. Beside those orderly vertical shapes, the pipe has a much less regular surface. Labels overlap, lettering changes size and small emblems interrupt one another from top to bottom.
I enjoy how the photograph shifts between those two ways of looking. From a distance, it reads as a simple red composition with a narrow stripe. Closer in, the stripe becomes a collection of individual marks. The building’s moulding supplies structure, while the stickers add the accumulated character of an everyday urban surface.
Made in Dublin in 2019, this colour photograph finds its subject in something easily passed on the street. It is a piece for someone who likes strong red wall art, graphic architectural details or photographs of a city’s less obvious corners. The pipe is ordinary, but its layered appearance changes the surrounding facade. I like keeping that small, irregular detail within such a bold and settled arrangement of colour.
