Stepped Facades and Tall Window Grids Above the River
I made this photograph from a boat on a sunny spring day, looking towards downtown Manhattan across the river. The vertical black and white view gathers several buildings into a compact cityscape, with a narrow band of water below and small bright clouds behind the rooftops. I was interested in their contrasting outlines as much as their height.
The pale stepped building near the left has a fine pattern of windows and terraces. Behind it, a taller, darker tower presents a much smoother rectangular face. Another window grid rises on the right, while smaller buildings fill the spaces between them. Seen from the water, those different surfaces come together without the distractions of a street-level view.
The shoreline gives the architecture a base. Piers, low structures and small details run across the bottom of the buildings, separating their dense vertical pattern from the river’s rougher horizontal texture. I kept that strip of water because it recalls the position from which I made the image. The city feels close, but there is still a clear distance between my camera and the waterfront.
Monochrome lets the bright facade, darker glass and repeated window openings hold their own tones. The pale clouds add a softer shape beside the hard rooflines without taking over the composition. What I like most is the city’s variety within such a contained view: several different architectural rhythms, joined by the same shoreline and seen together in one moment from the river.
