A Metal Fastening Across a Deeply Textured Door
I found this door while walking through London without a particular photograph in mind. Its surface caught my attention at close range, where the rough texture and small changes in light became more interesting than the entrance as a whole. I moved in to make the fastening the centre of the composition. That decision left the surrounding street outside the frame and turned a small architectural detail into the entire subject.
The horizontal metal strap crosses the dark vertical seam of the door. Its rounded end and rectangular opening give it a simple, recognizable shape, held against a much more uneven background. Small screw heads and rivets catch individual points of light. Lower down, the projecting handle has smoother highlights, offering a second focal point toward the left. Across the rest of the image, joins, patches and shallow marks divide the surface into areas that are similar in tone but different in texture.
In black and white, those slight differences become easier to follow. I wanted enough contrast to make the fastening stand out without losing the detail around it. The image is dark, but the highlights trace the edges and give the surface a sense of depth. Looking at it now, I am drawn back to the meeting of the horizontal strap and the vertical gap. It is a very small piece of London, photographed during an ordinary walk, with the close framing allowing its worn surfaces to carry the image.
