This photograph shows a line of nomadic eagle riders standing on horseback in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, each man holding a trained golden eagle high against the open sky. The riders form a wide, unified composition that stretches across the frame, emphasizing both the collective strength of the group and the vastness of the desert landscape behind them. Horses stand calmly beneath heavy traditional garments, while the eagles’ wings create sharp, powerful shapes against the lighter tones of the sky.

The Gobi Desert is often perceived as empty, but scenes like this reveal a region defined by endurance, tradition, and human presence. These are real eagle hunters, not staged subjects. Their clothing is practical and weathered, built for cold winds and long distances. The horses are compact and resilient, bred to survive harsh terrain. In black and white, the textures come forward—fur, leather, feathers, stone—each detail reinforcing a life shaped by necessity rather than display.

The early morning light softens the scene, avoiding dramatic shadows and keeping the complete line of riders visible and balanced. Subtle tonal shifts in the sky separate the birds from the background, while the darker ground anchors the composition. There is stillness here, not performance. The riders are composed and steady, embodying a tradition that continues quietly, far from modern distraction.

This photograph was created on location after traveling deep into the Gobi Desert and spending time living alongside the local community. I stayed in yurts heated by coal, shared meals with families, and experienced firsthand the physical demands of nomadic life.
