Mara River Wildebeest Crossing and Spray Colour Wildlife Photography
Bright Splashes Below a Winding Line of Animals
White spray breaks across the brown river as the leading wildebeest move away from the bank. I photographed this crossing in Tanzania’s Serengeti in 2023, after long hours following the herds and waiting for movement at the river. The frame holds a close sequence of animals, from those still on the upper slope to the ones already entering the water below.
I find the path through the picture particularly compelling. A loose line descends from the upper right, turns across the pale slope and narrows towards the river. The animals’ horns and shoulders make repeated shapes along that route. Near the water, their bodies overlap more closely, giving the lower part of the scene a different density.
The natural colours help separate each part of the terrain. Green growth clings to the bank, dry earth opens around the descending herd, and the brown river extends across the foreground. Against those quieter tones, the bright splashes become clear marks of movement.
For me, the photograph brings together the waiting that preceded the crossing and the speed of the moment when it began. Its appeal lies in seeing several stages of that movement at once. As a colour print, it offers a detailed view of the Mara River migration, with enough individual animals and small gestures to keep the eye exploring after the first impression of spray and forward motion.
