Amsterdam Mannequin Head in Shadow Black and White Still Life Photography
A Glossy Profile Among Paper and Small Objects
A partially assembled shop display stopped me while I was walking through Amsterdam. In the middle of crumpled paper and small objects, a mannequin head caught a narrow area of light. Much of the surrounding space remained dark. I photographed what was already there, drawn to the contrast between the smooth face and the folded, uneven material around it. The arrangement had enough detail to explore, but the illuminated profile gave me a clear place to begin.
The head faces to the right, with bright reflections along its cheek, nose and long neck. A fine horizontal join crosses the face, adding a line to its otherwise rounded form. Paper fills much of the left side, where the creases catch light at different angles. Below and beside the head, slender vessels, stacked dishes and a small grid-patterned object introduce quieter shapes. Their scale makes the head appear larger, while the dark margins keep the composition enclosed.
I chose black and white to concentrate on how the light separates these surfaces. The glossy highlights have a very different character from the softer tones in the paper. As I look at the photograph, my eye moves from the face toward the lower details, then returns to the profile. I wanted to preserve that uneven balance between an immediately recognizable subject and a setting that takes longer to read. For me, the interest lies in finding a still life during an ordinary walk, in an arrangement I would never have thought to make myself.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
