British Columbia Black Bear Among Mossy Rocks Black and White Wildlife Photography
A Forward Facing Bear Within A Textured Woodland Setting
The black bear faces forward above moss covered rocks, with its head and shoulders sharply defined against a softer woodland background. I photographed it in British Columbia’s interior in 2011. The close composition gives the animal a strong presence while keeping enough of the ground and fallen wood visible to place it within its surroundings.
Light catches the fur across the forehead, muzzle and upper back. Small rounded ears rise on either side of the head, and the eyes remain clear within the darker face. The front legs descend toward the rocks, where their heavy texture meets finer strands of grass. I find the differences within the dark fur especially interesting in black and white: it has highlights, deep shadows and many intermediate tones rather than one uniform surface.
The nearest rocks fill the bottom of the vertical frame. Their rounded shapes and rough moss add a different texture below the bear, while pale dry stems introduce thin lines at the right. Behind it, fallen branches cross a blurred pattern of woodland debris. That softer background keeps attention on the face without making the portrait feel detached from the forest. My interest is in the direct visual encounter, the detail of the animal and the materials around it. As a print, the photograph offers a substantial wildlife subject in a restrained palette, suited to someone drawn to Canadian bears or monochrome nature portraits.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
