Caddo Lake Cypress Trunk and Autumn Reflections Colour Woodland Photography
A Flared Tree Base Above Green Bayou Water
A broad cypress trunk gives this Caddo Lake photograph its centre of gravity. The base spreads outward into green water, while narrow trees and hanging moss fill the woodland behind it. I photographed this Texas scene in 2021, concentrating on the relationship between the textured trunk, the autumn foliage and their reflections.
The nearest tree is large enough to interrupt the many fine vertical lines in the background. Ridges run down its bark and widen as they approach the water. Light catches one side, leaving darker grooves and an irregular hollow to break up the surface. A small pale sign is fixed above the flared base, an understated detail within a much larger natural form.
Behind it, orange and yellow leaves appear among green foliage and grey strands of moss. The trees stand at different distances, making the forest feel layered rather than flat. I like the way the warm colours remain scattered through the frame instead of forming one solid canopy. They lead the eye around the central trunk and into the darker spaces between the trees.
The water holds a softer version of the same scene. Thin reflections descend from the far shore, while the foreground settles into broader areas of olive green. This combination of a strong tree form and delicate surrounding detail makes the image absorbing without needing a distant horizon. As a woodland print, it brings autumn warmth and the distinctive character of a flooded cypress forest into a living space.
