Open Book in a Samurai Home | Black and White Photography
Open Pages Beneath the Fine Lines of Shoji
The open pages give this corner of the room its focus. At Matsue's Samurai Residence in Japan, a low wooden stand supports a book filled with flowing characters, with a cabinet of bound volumes behind it. The black and white photograph brings the curves of the paper into close conversation with the straight lines of the shoji.
This is a detail of the master's private room, identified in the residence's own guide. The house distinguished those personal living spaces from the formal rooms used to receive visitors. Here, the reading stand and books bring that private side of the home into view through objects used close to the tatami floor.
The stand's shaped side panels and worn edges keep the scene tactile. Behind the book, the repeated edges of the stored volumes form another rhythm, smaller and less regular than the window grid. A cushion and the rim of a nearby brazier enter at the edges, connecting this close view to the wider room.
I find a special peace in these interiors. Their order comes through the relationship between individual things and the structure surrounding them. In this photograph, the writing adds a flowing pattern within that structure. I wanted the pages to remain the centre of attention while the wood, tatami and filtered light give them a quiet setting.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
