Bright Clouds Above Cuba’s Quiet Open Water
Clouds carry the drama in this Cuban seascape. I photographed the open water in black and white, letting a bright bank of clouds rise above a low, level horizon. The shallow sea in the foreground has a fine rippled texture that gives the wide view a sense of closeness.
My eye keeps returning to the central cloud, where the sunlit upper edge sits above a much darker underside. Smaller clouds stretch away on either side, balancing the weight of that larger shape. Without colour, their volume becomes clearer: light, shadow, and soft edges do the work.
I left the water broad and largely uninterrupted. Its small surface patterns contrast with the billowing forms overhead, and the straight horizon holds the two together. That balance matters to me. A view with so little in it can still have depth and movement, especially when the light makes each part feel different. The eye can wander across the foreground before lifting into the sky.
This black and white ocean print has an open, unhurried quality. It works as a quiet coastal image for a living room or bedroom, and its wide shape gives the clouds room to unfold across a wall. I think of it as a view of Cuba built around water and weather, with the richness of the scene held in its tones rather than a crowded shoreline.
