Multiple Painted Faces Within One Unusual Animal Form
An unusual painted creature spreads across a dark rectangle on a Havana wall. I encountered the mural while exploring the city and photographed it in 2017. In this black and white image, several faces appear within the same animal-like form, giving the artwork a mixture of familiar features and unexpected proportions.
The larger face on the right catches my eye first. Its broad head and long eye shapes contrast with the smaller face beneath a curved form on the left. Lower down, two more faces emerge near the body’s edge. I am drawn to that changing sense of scale, where looking closer keeps revealing another part of the design.
The creature’s limbs and pale contours stand out against the dark painted field. Around it, the lighter wall creates a simple boundary, with small marks and worn patches visible in the surface. The photograph keeps enough of that surround to show the mural as something encountered on a street rather than an image detached from its setting.
Monochrome brings attention to the painted highlights, shadowed areas, and texture. It lets the odd arrangement of faces carry the image without colour taking the lead. I wanted to preserve the visual surprise that made me stop, while leaving the artwork’s meaning open. For someone who enjoys surreal street imagery and urban detail, this photograph offers a distinctive Havana encounter that can keep changing as the eye moves across it.
