Rounded Chrome And Blue Paint Beneath An Ornate Facade
A pale blue Pontiac occupies the lower corner of this Havana street scene, its rounded bonnet and circular headlights set against an unusually elaborate building. I liked how the car and the facade shared the photograph without competing for attention. Both have strong individual details, and both show the marks of everyday use.
The Pontiac brings curves into an arrangement of straight lines. Chrome strips run down the bonnet towards the dark grille, while the front wheel turns outward slightly. Above it, barred windows, rectangular panels and decorative reliefs build a layered architectural backdrop. A large ventilation fan high on the wall adds another circle to the composition.
To the right, an open metal gate reveals a shadowed doorway. That dark recess anchors the image beside the lighter bodywork and washed grey walls. The blue is gentle rather than brilliant, which lets the worn surfaces remain visible. I wanted the colour to feel part of the street, with the car still belonging to its surroundings.
I made this photograph in Havana in 2017. What continues to interest me is the relationship between the small vehicle and the tall facade: the image offers a classic car portrait, but also a closer look at the city around it. Its subdued palette and architectural texture make it appealing for someone who enjoys vintage automotive photography, Cuban travel images or urban scenes with plenty to examine.
