Painted Figures and Blue Lettering on Weathered Yellow
Blue lettering and painted figures turn this yellow Havana storefront into something more than a building facade. A woman with a parasol stands beside the doorway, while a horse and carriage appear beneath the shuttered window on the right. I photographed the scene in 2017, drawn to the way these illustrations shared the wall with cracks, worn paint and the practical lines of metal grilles.
The cafe sign gives the upper part of the wall a playful flourish. Below it, the open entrance leads into a darker interior where colourful artwork is visible behind the bars. Wooden shutters flank the doorway, each with its own weathered surface. The pale yellow plaster brings those separate details together, with patches of exposed material interrupting the colour near the ground.
I like that the decoration and the building cannot be separated in this photograph. The painted woman, the carriage and the lettering all belong to this particular worn surface. Smooth new paint would change the feeling entirely. Here, the marks of use give the cheerful blue drawings something quieter to sit against, and the doorway adds depth to an otherwise direct view of the street frontage.
For a kitchen, dining area or welcoming hallway, this Havana photograph offers warm colour and a distinctly local street detail. It suits a room where a lively subject and visible texture can become part of the everyday surroundings.
