Havana Man With Box in Weathered Doorway Black and White Photography
An Ordinary Task Within A Tall Ornate Entrance
A cardboard box rests across his hands as he looks toward my camera from the doorway. I photographed this man in Havana, Cuba, keeping the tall wooden entrance and much of the worn exterior wall within the black and white frame. The ordinary task and detailed architecture came together in one brief street moment.
I was drawn first to the doorway’s surfaces. Decorative panels extend above the man, while peeling paint and damaged edges make the woodwork visibly textured. The dark opening separates his striped shirt and the box from the paler building around him.
The larger wall blocks repeat the rectangular shapes of the door panels. Their rough surfaces have a different scale from the finer carving and worn paint at the entrance. A small length of hanging vegetation introduces a less regular line near the upper edge. I wanted those surroundings to stay substantial rather than reduce the scene to only a portrait.
The man remains the visual anchor within that larger frame. His stance and direct look give the building a human point of connection, while the box makes the moment specific. Black and white brings attention to the contrast between light exterior and deep interior shadow. For me, the photograph preserves the intersection of a person, a familiar task and a Havana facade, with the place and the encounter contributing equally to its character.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
