Curving Metal Steps Within a Weathered Restaurant Interior
A narrow spiral staircase turns upwards through a Havana restaurant, surrounded by rough plaster, exposed brick, and an eclectic collection of furnishings. I found its winding shape especially appealing within this busy interior. In black and white, the staircase becomes a clear line through the room, with patterned metal steps and a curved rail giving the eye a route from floor to ceiling.
The stair’s open construction is important to the photograph. You can see the wall through its smaller openings, and the rail changes direction as it wraps around the central support. Those curves contrast with the wooden door, stacked crates, and heavy beams nearby. The surrounding objects are part of the restaurant’s character, but the staircase holds the composition together.
I kept enough of the room visible for that contrast to remain. The damaged plaster has an uneven, mottled texture, while the brickwork forms more regular bands along the lower wall. Overhead, the broad beams cross the view and frame the point where the stairs disappear into the opening above. The floor tiles introduce another quieter grid at the base. Looking at the photograph, my attention keeps moving between the repeated step pattern and the larger spiral that contains it. That combination of fine detail and strong form is what I wanted to preserve. The print offers a close architectural encounter in Havana, with the room’s weathered surfaces giving the elegant curve a grounded, everyday setting.
