Ornate Facade Details Beside a Shadowed Stair Entrance
Worn steps rise into a narrow arched entrance beside a tall wooden door in Havana. The stairway disappears into shadow, while patterned facade panels and rough wall surfaces remain clearly visible outside. I photographed this architectural detail for the way its decorative elements coexist with the marks of age and use.
The steps provide a natural route into the image. Their chipped edges and uneven surfaces catch the light differently, and the lower section makes the wear particularly apparent. Above them, the curve of the arch introduces a softer shape before the interior becomes dark. I like that the photograph offers an entrance without revealing where it leads.
Beside the stairs, the door supplies another kind of pattern. Panels, narrow grilles and a larger upper grille divide its tall shape into smaller parts. At the opposite edge, repeated diamond panels and rosette-like details add a more delicate ornament. These contrasts keep the scene engaging: smooth and rough, decorative and practical, open passage and closed door.
I made this Havana photograph in 2017. Black and white brings the surfaces together through light and texture, allowing the remaining craftsmanship to stand alongside the building’s wear. It is a close view of Cuban architecture for someone who enjoys old entrances and the details often missed in a broader street scene. My eye returns to the stairs, following their pale edges toward that dark opening.
