Vintage Havana Street Scene Beneath Cuba's Capitol Dome
The car nearly fills the foreground, but El Capitolio is what gives the scene its unmistakable Havana identity.
I made this photograph in 2017 while exploring the streets of Cuba's capital. A large black classic car had stopped in front of me, its polished body reflecting the bright tropical sky, while another vintage automobile edged into the frame from the left. Beyond them, the dome and long columned facade of El Capitolio rise above the traffic.
That layering is what interested me. Havana's old American cars are photographed constantly, and El Capitolio is one of the city's best-known landmarks, but here the two subjects occupy the same everyday street scene rather than feeling separated into tourist icons. Traffic lights, pedestrians, palm trees and additional cars across the road keep the photograph grounded in the city around them.
I also liked the muted colour. The black car dominates the lower half of the image, while pale stone, soft sky tones and restrained greens keep attention on shape and architecture. The Cuban license plate, chrome trim and distinctive rear fins add small details that reward a closer look.
For me, Havana is often most interesting when several parts of its identity collide in one frame. This photograph brings together classic automobiles, monumental architecture and ordinary street life—the kind of scene I could only have found by walking the city with a camera and waiting for the pieces to line up.
