A Small Gathering Among Weathered Facades and Balconies
A small group of children brings a human scale to this long Havana street. I photographed the scene in Cuba in 2017, with pale yellow walls, mint-green door surrounds, and brighter colours receding toward the far end of the block. The children occupy only a small part of the frame, yet their gathering gives the view its centre of interest.
The buildings carry much of the photograph’s colour and texture. Ornamental ironwork covers the nearest doorways, and balconies project above the narrow pavement. Hanging laundry breaks up the lines overhead. Closer to street level, patches of worn plaster and darker stone interrupt the softer painted surfaces. Those changes make the facades feel individual, even where their proportions repeat.
I kept a generous stretch of road in the foreground. Its quieter grey surface leads toward the figures and gives the surrounding colours room to stand out. Beyond them, the street continues between closely spaced buildings, drawing the eye into a smaller and increasingly colourful passage. A strip of clouded blue sky opens above it.
What draws me back to this photograph is the relationship between ordinary activity and the setting around it. The children are part of the street, rather than isolated from it. Their presence makes the balconies, doors, and worn walls feel inhabited. For a room that welcomes colour and travel photography, the print offers a detailed Havana view with everyday life at its heart.
