A Seated Child Mural Beside Loose Marks on Worn Plaster
A painted boy sits cross-legged on a Havana wall, his head tilted above a pale sleeveless shirt. Loose graffiti marks occupy the space beside him, while small cracks and worn patches remain visible across the plaster. I photographed this mural in 2017, keeping the figure and the surrounding wall together in a black and white street view.
The image is built around the boy’s sloping pose. His head leans to one side, and his bent arms lead towards the hands near the lower edge. Broad dark outlines define the legs, while softer shading rounds the face and torso. Those differences give the painted figure a sense of volume within the flat surface of the wall.
I find the smaller marks around the portrait useful to the composition. The loose black forms on the left have a different rhythm from the carefully drawn face, and the small signature on the right provides another point of detail. The wall’s irregular finish connects them, with pale areas, scratches and cracks interrupting the surface between the darker strokes.
As I walked through Havana, this mural gave me a reason to stop and look more closely at an ordinary facade. Monochrome lets the drawing, graffiti and plaster share one range of tones, keeping attention on line and texture. For someone drawn to Cuban street art and figurative urban imagery, this photograph offers a close view with an expressive painted subject. My eye returns to the tilted head before moving through the bent limbs and the quieter marks around them.
