A Small Bench Beside Worn Walls and Steps
The little bench gives this stone corner a human scale. It sits low against the wall, beside a short flight of steps rising toward an entrance at the edge of the frame. I was drawn to the simple arrangement of this Croatian house, where an everyday passage becomes an architectural subject.
Black and white brings the varied wall surfaces together without making them uniform. Blocks of exposed stone, worn plaster and darker patches sit beside a tall opening and a smaller barred window. The steps are lighter and more regular, with a solid side wall that cuts diagonally through the scene. Below them, the open ground leaves room around the bench.
I enjoy how the straight edges meet the less orderly surfaces. Window frames and step fronts offer clear lines, while the walls show irregular marks and changing texture. The bench adds another dark horizontal shape, giving the lower part of the photograph a point of interest beyond the stairs. No people are needed for the corner to feel connected to ordinary use.
I photographed this view in Croatia in 2020. Rather than showing a whole street or a complete building, I kept my attention on the small space between the wall and the entrance. For someone who enjoys European architectural details, the image offers stonework, simple furniture and a quiet route upward. Its interest comes from the way these modest parts fit together, with each surface retaining its own character.
