Two Different Windows Within a Weathered Stone Wall
The turquoise shutters gave me a reason to stop at this weathered house in southern Croatia. Their faded paint stands apart from the cream and warm brown stone, while a floral curtain adds a smaller patch of pink behind the lower window. I kept the wall close in the photograph, including the second window above it and the loose shutter panels near the ground.
The two openings have different characters. The upper one is closed by grey wooden shutters with dark metal hinges. Below it, the turquoise louvred shutters are open, exposing the curtain and the shadowed recess of the window. I like how the windows are offset rather than arranged in a neat vertical line. That gives each opening its own area within the masonry.
Individual stones occupy much of the image. Some are pale, others have warmer marks, and the joints between them form an irregular network across the façade. Small green plants grow along the lower wall. The detached pale panels rest nearby, their peeling surfaces adding another kind of texture beside the stone and shutters still in place.
I wanted the photograph to stay with what was visible in front of me. The building’s full story was not available, but its surfaces offered plenty to notice. The restrained wall colours make the turquoise especially clear, and the vertical frame keeps the two windows, ground and weathered details together as one small view of the Croatian street.
