Carved Balconies Beside A Rounded Wall And Distant Tower
A narrow gap between buildings reveals the top of a bell tower. On one side, carved stone supports and a balcony create an intricate facade; on the other, a rounded wall holds two closed shutters beneath a tiled roof. The photograph brings these different architectural shapes close together, leaving only a small area of sky.
I made this Croatian street view in 2020. What interests me is the contrast between the two nearer buildings. The left facade has projecting layers and repeated carved forms, while the right is simpler, with individual blocks and worn patches clearly visible. The tower behind them becomes a small focal point, its pointed roof and cross sitting above the darker tiles.
In black and white, the depth comes from both perspective and surface. Shadow beneath the balcony makes the carved supports more distinct, while the brighter rounded wall has a softer range of grey. I like following the lines inward: along the balcony, across the roof tiles, and finally toward the tower in the gap.
This architecture wall art suits someone who enjoys the close views found in old European streets. It offers detail without a crowded city scene, and its restrained tones can work naturally in a hallway, study or living room. The photograph’s character lies in the buildings’ different forms sharing one small space, from elaborate stone carving to plain shutters and the quiet glimpse of a tower beyond.
