Looking Through an Arch Into Croatia’s Old Streets
The underside of a stone arch sweeps across the top of this Croatian street photograph, framing a close arrangement of old buildings beyond. Rough masonry fills the near edge, while tiled roofs, shutters and narrow windows recede into the opening. I was drawn to the way one architectural detail could hold an entire street within it.
During my exploration of Croatia in 2020, this was the sort of view that made me slow down. There is little empty space in the photograph. Walls overlap, rooflines meet at different heights, and an ornamental chimney rises against a small patch of pale sky. Instead of stepping back for a broad view, I kept the arch close so its curved surface became part of the experience of looking down the lane.
Black and white brings out the differences between the materials: worn stone blocks, fine rows of brick and the softer surfaces of the buildings farther away. The dark shutters and sheltered underside of the arch give the brighter walls something to work against. Small signs of everyday use remain in the frame, keeping the scene connected to the lived-in street rather than turning it into an idealised historical setting.
This fine art photograph suits a collection centred on European architecture, old streets or richly textured monochrome work. I like its enclosed feeling—the sense of being just inside a passage, with another corner still waiting beyond the buildings.
