Woman Smoking Beneath the Pigeons in Dubrovnik | Limited Edition of 10
Cat Watching From the Opposite Window
This photograph was made while walking the old streets of Dubrovnik, where limestone walls hold centuries of weather, salt air, and quiet human routine. What caught me first was the line of pigeons perched along the roofline, evenly spaced like watchful spectators. Then I noticed the two windows beneath them, almost mirroring one another. In one, a white cat sits upright among potted plants, staring across the narrow space. In the other, a woman leans on her sill, cigarette in hand, suspended in a private moment.
The façade is textured limestone, warm and sunlit, each block carved with time. The shutters are thrown open, casting angled shadows that fall diagonally across the wall. Above, the sky is a deep Adriatic blue, clean and expansive. The repetition of architectural details—the corbels beneath the roof, the rectangular stone pattern, the balanced spacing of the windows—creates a structured stage. Against that structure, life unfolds quietly.
The woman is not performing. She is simply existing—elbow resting on stone, gaze turned outward, smoke drifting upward. Across from her, the cat holds its position, alert and curious. The pigeons above add another layer, a horizontal band of stillness framing the scene. It feels almost theatrical, yet entirely ordinary.
I photographed this on location in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, standing across the street and watching the geometry align. The moment lasted only seconds before the smoke dissipated and the cat shifted. That fleeting balance of architecture and life is what I respond to most in street work. The structure is permanent; the human presence is not.
Each print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. It is produced using archival pigment inks on professional archival paper, ensuring the subtle warmth of the stone and the depth of the blue sky remain true over time.
This piece lives at the intersection of architecture and daily ritual, and you can explore more work from this region in my Croatia wall art collection.
