Flowing Balcony Bands Between Two Rigid Window Grids

Curves sit between two sets of straight lines. In this black and white architectural photograph from Chicago, wavy balcony edges occupy the centre while neighbouring facades frame them with regular window grids. I was drawn to the way the three surfaces create a conversation within a tightly cropped view.

The central bands change shape from floor to floor. Some project farther forward, catching more light; others retreat and expose darker windows behind them. Their repeated edges suggest a flowing movement, even though everything in the photograph is fixed. The more rigid facades on either side make those variations especially noticeable.

On the left, the glass reflects fragments of another building, adding a second pattern inside the first. On the right, darker vertical divisions keep the geometry more direct. Between them, the balcony forms cross the frame in long horizontal sweeps. I kept the composition close so that the architecture could be read through these relationships, without street activity or a distant skyline competing for attention.

Monochrome makes the distinction between surfaces clear. Pale balcony edges stand apart from the darker glazing, while fine lines remain visible within the neighbouring grids. I like how the image offers both an identifiable urban subject and an abstract pattern of repetition and change. It is a Chicago architecture print where a small part of the city becomes a study of curves, reflections, and the spaces between buildings.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
