Layers of Handwritten Names Across a Warm Orange Surface

There is very little empty space on this wall. Names, dates, looping signatures and larger painted marks overlap across an orange surface at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana. I photographed a close section of it because the accumulated handwriting had become a composition of its own.

Some marks are small enough to read as individual messages. Others are broad strokes that cross several earlier inscriptions, turning words into shapes. Black lines give the lower part of the frame a strong graphic weight, while white lettering moves more loosely through the middle and upper areas. Small blue accents interrupt the warm background.

I was drawn to the differences between the inscriptions. Each hand leaves a different rhythm: neat letters, hurried loops, bold outlines and dense clusters of names. Together, they create a surface that feels crowded but never uniform. The photograph keeps those contrasts visible without trying to identify every person who wrote there.

The tight framing removes the surrounding bar from view. That lets the wall sit between a record of visitors and an abstract arrangement of colour and line. The orange ground remains present through the gaps, tying the many separate marks together.

For me, the image holds the energy of a shared surface that has kept changing as people leave something behind. It is a Havana detail with a strong visual presence, built from handwriting, layered marks and the character of the wall itself.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
