Rounded Pebbles in a Dense Pattern of Green
Green runs through nearly every part of this photograph. It catches on the rounded stones, gathers in patches and leaves small areas of grey, pink and brown exposed. Looking down at this Cape Breton beach detail, I found a pattern that felt close to abstraction while remaining entirely recognizable as a shoreline surface.
The stones vary enough to keep the repeated shapes interesting. Broad rounded pebbles sit beside narrow pieces and much smaller fragments, with dark gaps separating them. Some surfaces carry a thick green covering; others show just a trace. I enjoy how the colour connects the scene without making the individual stones look alike. The view has no horizon and no single object that needs to be treated as a focal point.
Texture was what drew me to this subject in 2014. The close viewpoint lets the surface become the whole landscape, giving small changes in size and colour the same importance that a hill or a tree might have in a wider photograph. I wanted to keep that density rather than simplify it into a handful of carefully isolated stones.
For someone who enjoys organic patterns, this is a nature image with plenty to explore. The green is lively, but the rounded forms and earthy undertones keep it grounded. It brings a particular detail from the shores of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, into view: a patch of beach that rewards looking more closely at what is underfoot.
