Silver Fish Gather Between Reef Walls and Blue Water

The fish form a pale, shifting band between the rough reef surfaces and the blue water beyond. I photographed this school in the Bahamas, where silver bodies and yellow markings stand out against a much darker arrangement of underwater growth. The open water provides a clear background above them. That simple field of blue lets the individual shapes remain visible within a densely layered group.

I like the way the school occupies several depths at once. The nearer fish appear larger and more distinct, while those farther away overlap into a finer pattern towards the left. Their repeated eyes, fins and curved bodies give the photograph its movement. Around them, the reef has a very different texture: irregular surfaces, branching edges and patches of brown, green and darker colour. It rises on both sides of the group, leaving a passage of brighter water through the middle.

Colour helps separate those parts of the scene. The blue is the broadest and simplest area, the reef carries the most varied tones, and the fish catch the light in smaller, paler surfaces. I wanted the photograph to hold the group and its surroundings together. Looking closely, I can follow one fish for a moment, then lose it again among the neighbouring shapes. That change between seeing individuals and seeing a school is what interests me most. The image preserves a lively underwater scene with enough surrounding detail to make the reef feel like part of the photograph’s structure.
