Northern Gannet Amid Ocean Spray Black and White Wildlife Photography
A Pale Bird Facing Forward Through Rippled Water
Water droplets hang above a northern gannet as it faces toward the camera. Its pale body stretches across the surface, while small waves gather around its chest. I made this photograph in 2015, and the fine spray is what gives the close view its particular energy. The bird remains clearly defined within a much busier pattern of moving water.
The head rises near the right of centre, with the long pointed bill directed forward and the eyes visible on either side. Dark markings around the bill provide a crisp contrast against the pale face. The body extends toward the left, where the wing and tail form a lower, more horizontal shape. I like that difference between the upright head and the bird’s long outline on the water. Droplets scatter unevenly above it, catching enough light to stand out as small bright points.
The surrounding surface changes from softer ripples in the distance to broader, darker waves near the foreground. There is no horizon or shore in the frame, so the photograph stays with the bird and the water immediately around it. Black and white makes the pale plumage and spray particularly noticeable while preserving the many grey textures below. My interest here is in a brief, detailed moment rather than a general seabird scene. A print brings the gannet’s direct gaze and the suspended droplets together in a lively monochrome wildlife study.
