Weathered White Hulls And Bright Accents On Rippled Water
A weathered white fishing boat sits nearest the camera, its hull catching warm light against blue grey water. A red ring and blue round object add a concentrated patch of colour near its bow. I photographed these rowboats in Havana Harbour, Cuba, in 2017. The nearest boat gives the image its focus, with others scattered farther across the surface.
The water fills the frame, leaving the boats without a visible shoreline or sky. Small ripples break the reflections into short, uneven marks. Around the foreground hull, light and dark areas create a lively texture that contrasts with the boat’s straighter sides. A thin mooring line reaches into the water, tying its position to the surrounding space.
Farther back, a pale boat appears on the right and a blue edged boat near the upper centre. Smaller craft recede toward the left. Their different distances give the scene depth while leaving plenty of water between them. I like the informal arrangement: each boat has its own position, yet the repeated low hulls draw the whole view together.
The colour is restrained apart from those few brighter accents. Worn paint, warm highlights and cool water give the photograph an everyday maritime character. My interest is in the boats as they appear here, with their surfaces and spacing carrying the scene. For a room with a connection to Cuba, fishing harbours or coastal life, this horizontal image offers a close view of the working waterfront through small craft and reflected light.
