A Long Snowy Coast Beneath Streaks of Cloud
Antarctica stretches across the frame as a bright line of snow and rock in this black and white landscape photograph. I left a broad sky above the mountains and a darker strip of ocean below, giving the snowy coast a clear place between the two.
The view is wide enough to follow several peaks without settling on just one. Some faces are smooth with snow, while others show dark cuts of rock. I like the way those changes make the range feel continuous and varied at the same time. The thin clouds above it add another set of horizontal lines, softer than the mountain edges.
Working in black and white makes the separation especially clear. The ocean has a fine, restless texture; the mountains are bright and solid; the sky opens into a much quieter field. I wanted all three to remain visible rather than letting the snow take over the entire picture.
Small details along the ridge reward a closer look, but from across a room the photograph reads as a simple meeting of land, sea, and sky. That is the balance I enjoy most here.
