Moving Animals Spread Across an Open African Grassland
I remember the sound of hooves first, a low rolling noise as more wildebeest came into view. I photographed this Serengeti herd in 2023, keeping the frame broad enough to show the animals moving through the surrounding landscape. The herd forms a loose band across the grass, with several nearer figures still separate from the denser gathering beyond.
That arrangement gives the image its sense of movement. The closest animals lead the eye towards the others, and the group continues around the dark shrubs towards the right. I like how individual backs, legs and horns remain visible within the larger pattern. The open foreground gives those nearer animals space, while trees and bushes establish the route through the scene.
Heavy clouds make a broad ceiling above the grassland. I leaned into a sepia tone in the finished photograph because it echoed the subdued light and atmosphere I experienced that day. The warm greys connect the sky, vegetation and animals, allowing the shapes of the herd to carry much of the picture.
For me, the photograph holds the scale of watching a migration unfold within a real landscape. It offers both a clear wildlife subject and a view of the terrain around it. As a print, the herd is immediately readable from a distance, while a closer look reveals smaller groups and individual animals moving through the grass.
