Bare Trunks and Bright Clouds Mirrored in Still Water

The clouds appear almost as clearly in the water as they do in the sky. Between those two pale groups, bare trunks rise through the swamp, with a darker forest continuing behind them. I was drawn to this combination of a strong reflection and the irregular trees breaking through it in Algonquin Park.

The nearest trunks stand on the right, some straight and others leaning across the view. Smaller dead trees continue through the middle of the pond, forming a finer pattern against the far woodland. Their reflections add another set of lines below the water’s edge, so the scene is both orderly and complicated at once.

Black and white makes the bright clouds especially useful. They provide broad shapes above and below the darker tree line, while the trunks introduce narrow marks across that simpler arrangement. I enjoy how the water holds the landscape together without making the lower half an exact copy of the upper one. Fallen branches and small surface interruptions keep the reflection connected to the physical pond.

I photographed this Algonquin Park view in 2005. The subject that held my attention was the whole wetland setting: living woodland behind, dead standing trees in front and open water carrying both. I wanted the stillness to remain visible through the reflection, but also to preserve the rougher forms that make this particular swamp distinct. The photograph offers detail in the trunks and a much broader sense of space in the mirrored sky.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
