A Raised Torch Against Heavy Layers of Cloud
The sky takes up more space than the statue, and that is what gives this view its tension. The Statue of Liberty stands clearly above its pedestal, while dark and pale clouds gather around the raised torch. I wanted the familiar New York landmark to remain unmistakable without making it the only thing to look at.
There is a firm structure at the bottom of the photograph: rippled water, the waterfront wall and the broad base beneath the statue. Trees form a lower, softer edge behind it. Above that settled arrangement, the clouds have less predictable shapes and much stronger changes in brightness. The two parts of the scene hold each other in balance.
Black and white makes the contrast especially useful. The statue’s robes and pedestal retain detail, while the sky moves from bright openings to heavier grey masses. I find the small clear shape of the torch important here. It rises into the clouded space and helps the eye connect the monument to the atmosphere around it.
I photographed this view in 2009. For me, the interest is in seeing a widely recognized subject within a particular sky rather than treating it as an isolated symbol. The image offers both a clear landmark portrait and a broader waterside setting. It suits someone drawn to New York photography, monuments or city images where weather and light have as much presence as the architecture.
