Bright Summit Snow Above Layered Rock and Dark Conifers

I photographed this view while hiking the Plain of the Six Glaciers trail in Banff, Alberta. The sun had broken through the clouds, catching the snow on the peak above a deeply shaped valley. In black and white, the bright summit, layered rock and darker trees give the landscape a strong sense of depth.

I kept the trees in the foreground rather than moving the frame entirely toward the mountain. Their narrow tops rise at different heights, with the closest group filling the lower right. Beyond them, a broad stony slope turns into the valley, leading toward the high rock face at the centre. That route through the picture helps the peak feel distant as well as large.

The mountain has several textures to follow. Horizontal layers cross its steep face, loose slopes spread beneath it, and snow traces the upper edge. Another snowy ridge appears at the right, while the rock on the left closes part of the view. Clouds gather above the main summit without hiding its outline.

I waited for the light because those differences were what I wanted to hold. The dark forest and the pale upper slopes could share the same frame once the summit brightened. For me, the photograph keeps the scale of the hike in view: close trees, a valley between them and a mountain that still rises well beyond the path I was walking.
