Green Branches and Patchy Snow Above Red Earth
Snow makes the red ground seem even warmer. It rests in small patches around a spreading evergreen and catches along the green branches, while orange cliffs rise behind the tree. I was drawn to that meeting of winter colour and desert terrain, where neither the snow nor the exposed earth takes over completely.
The tree gives the photograph its shape. Its uneven crown reaches across the middle of the scene, with a dark trunk and bare lower branches still visible beneath the foliage. White along the upper branches picks out their direction without hiding the green. On the ground, stones, grasses and open red soil break up the snowfall, creating a pattern that continues the contrast below the tree. The cliffs behind introduce broader horizontal bands, and the clouded sky adds cool grey tones above all that warm rock.
I photographed this desert winter scene in 2010. What interested me was not simply the presence of snow, but the way it made the familiar textures easier to separate. The rough ground, the branching tree and the distant cliff face each respond differently to the pale covering. I wanted that variety to remain visible in the colour photograph. For someone who enjoys desert landscapes or unexpected seasonal contrasts, the image offers a view that is both rugged and softened, with green, white and red held together in one natural scene.
