An Open River Below A Low Shoreline And Layered Clouds
Water and sky take most of the space in this view of Sault Ste. Marie’s waterfront. I photographed the scene across the St. Marys River in 2021, with the distant buildings forming a narrow band between a textured water surface and layers of cloud. Black and white keeps the composition focused on those broad relationships.
I stood along the river watching the light change as clouds passed overhead. The shoreline offered small, distinct shapes within a much larger open view: taller structures, low buildings, and a vessel near the far bank. Their scale is important to the photograph. They give the scene a city setting without becoming large enough to close down the space.
Across the foreground, fine ripples catch different tones of light. Above, the clouds vary from broad soft bands to smaller, brighter shapes. I like the contrast between the river’s subtle texture and the more pronounced movement in the sky. The horizon connects them with a steady line.
I wanted the photograph to preserve that sense of balance. The city is present, but it shares the frame with the water and weather around it. Monochrome makes the details of the shoreline easier to hold within the larger scene, with no single colour drawing the eye away. For a room that suits understated waterfront photography, this wide view offers space, texture, and a quiet record of an Ontario city seen from across its river.
