Small Flying Shapes Across Sky And Crowded Rock Ledges
Seabirds fill the sky above a layered cliff on Bonaventure Island in this 2015 photograph. More birds gather along the rock ledges, appearing as pale lines against the darker face. I find the relationship between those small moving shapes and the substantial cliff especially compelling: the birds bring activity to a landscape built from broad, solid forms.
The cliff enters from the left and steps down toward the right. Long horizontal layers divide its face, with darker vertical streaks and deeper recesses interrupting the stone. The nearest lower surfaces are smoother and more open, while the ledges above carry dense gatherings of birds. Their small scale makes the height and breadth of the rock easier to appreciate.
Above the cliff, individual birds scatter across a pale clouded sky. Some show a clear spread of wings; others are distant marks that become more numerous near the rock. I like how the open sky gives each shape room while still keeping the larger gathering visible. The black and white treatment connects the pale birds with the lighter rock surfaces and the soft greys overhead.
A narrow strip of textured water sits along the bottom. It completes the coastal setting without drawing attention away from the cliff and the air above it. This is a photograph of a seabird colony within its landscape, with the interest shared between flying birds, occupied ledges and the layered stone. As a print, it offers both the activity of wildlife and the strong structure of a rugged island coast.
