Pale Snow Beneath A Rugged Ridge And Layered Clouds
A low rocky ridge crosses the scene beneath a sky full of layered cloud. Snow fills the shallow spaces between exposed stone, making a smooth foreground against the rougher mountain surface. This photograph from Argentina’s Martial Mountains has a restrained palette: pale grey, cool white and small patches of brown vegetation.
I photographed the landscape in 2011. Rather than a single pointed summit, the image follows an uneven line of rock with rounded rises and dips. Fractures and ledges make a fine pattern across the ridge, and the snow gathers against them in broad, clean shapes. I like the quiet contrast between those two surfaces. It allows a modest stretch of terrain to become the whole subject.
The sky occupies much of the scene. Some clouds are softly spread, while others form darker bands and small rounded shapes above the ridge. Their gentle changes in tone echo the snow below, giving the photograph a cool, open feeling. Looking longer brings out the warmer flecks among the stones, which keep the landscape from feeling entirely colourless.
